Tragedy as Social Media Influencer, Aunty Esther, Dies After Battle With Cancer - The Alternative News

Popular social media influencer and breast cancer patient, Mensah Omolola, widely known on X (formerly Twitter) as Aunty Esther, has died after a prolonged battle with cancer.

News of her death emerged on Saturday night after prominent X user Auntymuse (@AUNTYMUSE_) reacted to a post announcing her passing. Quoting an earlier post by @swaagsp, which read, “Unfortunately, we lost Aunty Esther. Very sad!”, Auntymuse wrote, “May her soul rest in peace.”

The announcement sparked an outpouring of grief from Nigerians who had closely followed Aunty Esther’s health journey on social media.

Shortly after, @Wizarab10, the X user who coordinated fundraising efforts for her medical treatment, also confirmed the development, writing, “It is well. Peaceful rest to her.”

Aunty Esther’s death comes weeks after her case ignited nationwide conversations around faith, medical ethics, and public fundraising.

Earlier this month, her health condition gained widespread attention following online appeals for financial support to fund her cancer treatment. Nigerians responded massively, donating over ₦30 million within days.

As of December 1, 2025, @Wizarab10 disclosed that a total of ₦30.7 million had been raised, with a recorded balance of ₦30,776,252 at the time.

Controversy surrounded her treatment choices after she declined a blood transfusion recommended by doctors, citing her religious beliefs as a Jehovah’s Witness.

In several posts on X, Aunty Esther provided updates on her condition, stating that medical tests showed the cancer was limited to her breast and armpit, while her vital organs were unaffected.

She explained that doctors advised boosting her blood level before commencing chemotherapy. According to her, her family opted for injections and nutritional support to improve her blood count, with plans to begin chemotherapy later.

@Wizarab10 later revealed that Aunty Esther’s church had warned of possible disciplinary measures, including disfellowship, should she accept a blood transfusion.

He also disclosed that doctors proposed two treatment options: one involving a transfusion-supported procedure that was faster and within the available funds, and another transfusion-free option that would take longer and cost significantly more. Aunty Esther chose the latter in adherence to her faith.

The decision sparked intense debate online, with some Nigerians questioning the ethics of raising public funds while declining a life-saving medical option. Reality TV star Natacha Akide, popularly known as Tacha, described the situation as “pure madness” in a post on X.

Despite the criticism, @Wizarab10 consistently maintained that all donations were used strictly for Aunty Esther’s treatment and welfare. He regularly shared expense updates, including receipts for food and care items, noting that Aunty Esther had specific dietary needs.

Her passing has left many Nigerians mourning, as tributes continue to pour in across social media platforms.
