The United States has reportedly captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife over allegations of international drug trafficking.
According to Naija News, the development comes months after the U.S. government increased the reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest to $50 million, citing his alleged involvement in transnational narcotics operations.
The United States had, in 2020 during former President Donald Trump’s first administration, indicted Maduro alongside several senior Venezuelan officials on charges bordering on drug trafficking and narco-terrorism.
Confirming the development, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday via his Truth Social account that Maduro and his wife had been apprehended and flown out of Venezuela.
Trump stated that the operation was carried out by U.S. law enforcement agencies in what he described as a large-scale operation.
“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the country,” Trump wrote.
He added that further details would be provided during a news conference scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Mar-a-Lago.
“This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement. Details to follow. There will be a News Conference today at 11 A.M., at Mar-a-Lago. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” he said.
Venezuelan authorities have yet to issue an official response to the claim.
