A youth, Mr. Igwe Akuma of Ndi Uma compound, was on Friday murdered during a violent clash in Okon-Aku community, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, sparking widespread arson and destruction of property.
Following the killing, angry youths reportedly set ablaze several houses, vehicles and other valuables belonging to individuals in the community.
Condemning the incident, the Udumeze of Ohafia, led by Ezie Ohamoha Awa Orji Udonsi, in conjunction with the Ohafia Council of Monarchs, described the murder as gruesome and unjustifiable. In a statement issued on Saturday, the traditional rulers revealed that the deceased was preparing for his wedding, scheduled to hold in a few days, before his life was cut short.
The statement read, "The Udumeze condemns in its entirety the gruesome murder of a young Ohafian who was said to be getting married in a few days,” while sympathising with the bereaved family.
The council stressed that there is no justification for killing an Ohafia son under any guise, regardless of provocation, adding that violence and destruction were unacceptable ways to begin the new year.
Appealing for calm, the traditional body urged restraint between the Ndi Owom and Ndi Uma compounds, assuring residents that it is working closely with security agencies to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
Confirming the incident, the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, told DAILY POST that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ohafia led a team of officers to arrest some suspects in connection with the violence.
She disclosed that two police tactical teams have been deployed to the area to restore and maintain law and order, while those arrested are currently undergoing interrogation.
