Real Madrid have officially parted ways with head coach Xabi Alonso, less than 24 hours after their 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Supercopa final.
The LaLiga giants confirmed the decision in a statement on Monday, bringing an end to Alonso’s spell as first-team manager. The development comes shortly after the former midfielder downplayed the importance of the Supercopa, describing it as “the least important” competition the club would play this season.
“Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as first-team coach,” the statement read.
“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.
“Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire technical team for their work and dedication during this time, and wishes them the best of luck in this new stage of their lives.”
Alonso had been under mounting pressure in recent weeks following the club’s inconsistent performances in both LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League.
The decision to relieve him of his duties comes just two days before Madrid’s next fixture, a Copa del Rey Round of 16 clash against Albacete.
