Iran on Saturday vowed to “respond decisively” after the United States and Israel launched strikes on its territory, escalating regional tensions amid ongoing negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

In a statement, Iran’s foreign ministry said the country had done “everything necessary to prevent war” but warned that its armed forces would retaliate against what it described as aggression.

“Just as we were ready for negotiations, we are now more prepared than ever to defend the Iranian nation,” the ministry said.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) later announced it had launched a first wave of missile and drone attacks targeting Israel.

“The first wave of widespread missile and drone attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran against the occupied territories has begun,” the IRGC said in a statement.

The latest escalation follows earlier remarks by US President Donald Trump, who vowed to “annihilate” Iran’s navy and missile sites.

Meanwhile, an Iraqi military base hosting a pro-Iran armed faction was struck by airstrikes, resulting in casualties, according to Iraqi security officials and sources within the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), also known as Hashed al-Shaabi.

The base in Jurf al-Sakher, also called Jurf al-Nasr, primarily hosts the pro-Iran group Kataeb Hezbollah.

A source within the PMF said the strike targeted the 47th brigade of Kataeb Hezbollah.

Iraq’s security media cell said the area was hit by several airstrikes at about 11:50 am (0850 GMT), killing at least two people and wounding three others.

A source from Kataeb Hezbollah said two of its members were killed and five others wounded.

Officials said it was not immediately clear whether the airstrikes were carried out by the United States or Israel.

Kataeb Hezbollah, which operates within the PMF framework, is part of the Iran-backed “axis of resistance” and has previously warned Washington of “immense losses” if war breaks out in the region.
