Plateau: 10 Killed in Coordinated Attacks on Riyom Local Government Area Communities | The Alternative News

Fresh violence erupted in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday night as armed bandits carried out coordinated attacks on Jol community and Dorowa Babuje in the Rob District, killing at least 10 persons.

The attacks, which occurred between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., were confirmed by the National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYMA), Barrister Solomon Dalyop, during a telephone interview with a correspondent of Channels Television in Jos.

Dalyop said nine persons were killed in Dorowa Babuje, while one person was confirmed dead in Jol in what he described as separate but near-simultaneous attacks.

According to him, the assailants who attacked Jol arrived on motorcycles from the Manga axis, despite prior warnings allegedly issued to security agencies about suspicious movements in the area.

He explained that personnel of Operation Rainbow, the Plateau State security outfit, were already deployed and succeeded in repelling the attackers, limiting the number of casualties.

In Dorowa Babuje, Dalyop stated that the attackers reportedly emerged from the Jong-Wereh area, where they were believed to have camped for some time. He noted that the military was alerted promptly and responded swiftly, preventing further loss of lives.

“If not for the quick intervention of the military in Dorowa, the casualty figure would have been much higher. We must commend them for their swift response,” Dalyop said.

Efforts to obtain an official response from the police were unsuccessful as the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, did not respond to calls as of press time. The Nigeria Police Force had yet to issue an official statement regarding the attacks.

The latest killings add to growing concerns over recurring violence in Riyom, widely regarded as one of Plateau State’s volatile flashpoints, where farming communities have faced repeated night attacks, ambushes, and displacement in recent months.

Residents of Jol and Dorowa Babuje remain on edge as families mourn their loved ones and call for sustained security presence to forestall further violence.

Community leaders and youth groups have renewed appeals to both the federal and state governments to implement long-term security and peacebuilding measures in Riyom and surrounding communities.
