The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), in collaboration with the British Council, has trained Education Secretaries across Local Government Education Authorities and headteachers of public primary schools on professional standards.

The sensitisation and training programme which took place at Park Inn, Kuto, Abeokuta during which a lecture titled ‘’Reviewing Leadership and Management Skills and Becoming Outstanding Leaders’’ was delivered by the Registrar of TRCN, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, said standards remained the watchword in the education sector.

She urged school leaders to work as a team for the development of learners and strive to distinguish themselves in order to command respect, encouraged headteachers to collaborate effectively with Education Secretaries and remain focused on their core mandate. She outlined key areas where school leaders must demonstrate competence, including instructional leadership, operational management, strategic vision and community engagement. According to her, familiarity and closer engagement with teachers would enhance overall school performance.

She also reiterated the importance of professional registration, urging teachers to register with TRCN, noting that unregistered teachers would no longer be allowed to teach in classrooms after 2027.

Highlighting the purpose of the professional standards, a resource person from the British Council, Mr. Jamiu Aliyu, said school leaders should create time to reflect on their performance, shift focus from mere administration to leading teaching and learning and embrace behavioral changes that support improved outcomes.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, the Education Secretary of Abeokuta South Local Government, Fadage, Odeda expressed appreciation to the organisers and pledged to implement the knowledge gained to improve educational delivery.
