The Republic of Türkiye has condemned the deadly terrorist attack on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives and reaffirming its support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Türkiye said it was “deeply saddened by the loss of lives caused by the terrorist attack that took place in Nigeria’s Kwara State.”
“We strongly condemn this heinous attack and extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and to the people of Nigeria. Türkiye will continue to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism,” the statement read.
PUNCH Online reports that the attack occurred on Tuesday shortly after 5:00 p.m., when armed assailants arrived on motorcycles and simultaneously invaded the two communities. The attackers reportedly surrounded the villages before opening fire from multiple directions.
More than 75 residents were killed in the attack, while many others fled the area to escape further violence, leaving the communities largely deserted.
A resident, identified as Umar, told reporters that the gunmen completely encircled the community before launching the assault.
“They started shooting from all angles so nobody could escape,” he said.
According to him, residents who attempted to flee were shot, while those who remained were rounded up at the palace of the village head.
“Those who ran were gunned down. Those who stayed back were gathered at the palace, tied up and shot,” Umar said.
He added that several people were abducted during the attack, including close relatives of the traditional ruler.
“The wife of the village head, his mother and three of his children were among those taken away by the attackers,” he disclosed.
