Consensus May Favour Me — Iyabo Obasanjo Eyes Ogun APC Ticket | The Alternative News

A governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Iyabo Obasanjo, has expressed confidence that the party’s possible adoption of a consensus candidate ahead of the 2027 elections could work in her favour.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television on Thursday, Obasanjo said her early declaration of interest and sustained grassroots mobilisation place her at an advantage over other aspirants.

She noted that several potential contenders are yet to formally declare their ambitions, despite visible political activities suggesting interest.

“I see it as beneficial to me. Several others have not officially declared, even though their actions suggest interest, and no fresh aspirant has stepped forward this late compared to when I made my intention known,” she said.

The former senator emphasised that her support base is rooted in performance rather than financial inducement, citing her previous roles in public service.

“For me, it’s clearly an advantage, and I’m very confident about the support I enjoy on the ground. It’s not built on money politics but on my performance as commissioner for health and later as a senator,” she stated.

Obasanjo added that her tenure in the Senate remains widely regarded as impactful, particularly among constituents at the grassroots.

On the issue of consensus candidacy, she argued that the process is designed to reflect both party interests and public sentiment, rather than impose unpopular choices.

“I believe consensus can produce credible candidates. It doesn’t mean leaders ignore public opinion; rather, it involves considering what people actually want,” she said.

According to her, political parties are primarily driven by the need to secure electoral victory and are therefore unlikely to endorse candidates lacking broad support.

“Consensus will ultimately favour those who can win elections because the party’s goal is victory. They won’t impose an unpopular choice that could create tension among aspirants or discourage strong contenders,” she added.

She maintained that, given her perceived popularity and early engagement, a consensus arrangement would likely tilt in her favour as the 2027 governorship race approaches.
