Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned from his position to pursue his governorship ambition in Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Tuggar, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), reportedly submitted his resignation on Monday, just 24 hours before the March 31, 2026 deadline set by the presidency for political appointees seeking elective office.
The directive was issued by President Bola Tinubu, mandating all appointees with political ambitions to vacate their offices on or before the stipulated date.
The instruction, conveyed through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.
Tuggar’s exit signals the beginning of a wave of expected resignations by political appointees aiming to contest elective positions, in compliance with electoral guidelines.
