Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, has resigned from the cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing his intention to pursue the Oyo State governorship in 2027.
In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to the President through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Adelabu stated that his exit would take effect from April 30, 2026.
The former minister explained that his decision aligns with his long-standing political ambition to govern Oyo State, a goal he said dates back to 2016. He noted that his previous role as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and his resignation from that position in 2018 were also part of this political pursuit.
Adelabu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, describing his tenure as a privilege and an avenue to contribute to reforms in Nigeria’s power sector.
He added that his resignation is in compliance with the amended Electoral Act 2026 and is intended to ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities within the ministry.
His exit comes weeks after he publicly apologised to Nigerians over persistent nationwide power outages, which have caused widespread hardship for households and businesses. He had assured that measures were being implemented to improve electricity supply, describing the outages as temporary despite rising demand during the dry season.
The development marks another cabinet change ahead of the 2027 general elections, as political activities begin to intensify across the country.
