The Okun Development Association has backed the appointment of Joash Amupitan as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, describing it as a merit-based decision.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its President General, Ambassador (Chief) Akenson Rotimi, the group commended Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment, stating that it reflects competence, integrity and a commitment to national service.

The association said the development is an honour to Okunland in Kogi State and to Nigerians who believe in rewarding capacity and character in public office. It declared its full support for Amupitan, citing his track record, leadership qualities and respect for due process.

According to the statement, Amupitan possesses the discipline, intellectual depth and moral courage required to lead the electoral body at a critical time in Nigeria’s democratic journey. It expressed confidence that his leadership would strengthen the credibility of the commission and enhance public trust in the electoral process.

The group further described him as a symbol of integrity, humility and service, noting his contributions as a scholar and administrator in building strong institutions.

While acknowledging that the office would attract scrutiny, the association urged political actors and stakeholders to exercise restraint and channel grievances through established legal and institutional mechanisms.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to national unity and democratic stability, expressing confidence that Amupitan would discharge his duties with fairness and impartiality.

The group called on Nigerians to support and pray for the new INEC chairman as he assumes office.
