The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a full investigation into the killing of a police inspector, Habila Mangai, by a truck driver in Imo State.

Mangai, attached to the Isiala Mbano Division of the Nigeria Police Force, was reportedly knocked down by a Mack truck driven by Chisom Ajah along the Owerri-Okigwe Road while on stop-and-search duty.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, said the officer was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre Owerri, where he was confirmed dead.

According to the police, the driver and the vehicle have been taken into custody and handed over to the State Motor Traffic Department (SMTD) in Owerri for further investigation.

The IGP commiserated with the family of the deceased, his colleagues, and the Imo State Police Command, assuring that justice would be served.

“The Nigeria Police Force assures the public that a thorough investigation has been instituted to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, and that justice will be duly served in accordance with the law,” the statement read.

The police also urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations, and be mindful around operational checkpoints and duty posts.
