The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has renewed its call for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, over allegations linked to a controversial legal document.
In a statement issued on Sunday, MURIC accused Amupitan of authoring an 80-page legal brief allegedly used by the United States of America to indict Nigeria on claims of Christian genocide.
The group expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as the Federal Government’s silence on calls by Islamic organisations for the INEC chairman’s removal, describing the situation as insensitive.
MURIC said it had lost confidence in Amupitan, alleging that his continued leadership poses a threat to Muslim voters and the credibility of the electoral system.
The organisation also raised concerns over the planned voter revalidation exercise, claiming it could disenfranchise Muslim voters.
It further criticised the INEC chairman for not publicly addressing the allegations, noting that public officials in other countries often resign over similar controversies.
MURIC urged the Federal Government to replace Amupitan, insisting that his continued stay in office undermines trust in Nigeria’s electoral process.
The INEC chairman has yet to respond publicly to the allegations.
