The Ogun State Nursing and Midwifery Committee has debunked reports describing one Kehinde Adesanya, a suspect linked to the death of a corps member in Abeokuta as a nurse, declaring that findings from its investigation revealed that the individual is not a registered practitioner but a quack.
This was contained in a press statement signed by the Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Serifat Aminu on behalf of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) led by the Registrar, Dr. Ndagi Al-Hassan, following a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident which had earlier been reported in sections of the media.
Dr. Aminu stated that the Committee, in line with its regulatory mandate, reviewed available records and conducted necessary checks, confirming that the individual in question is not licensed or recognised by the NMCN, the regulatory body for the nursing profession, to practise nursing in Ogun State or anywhere in Nigeria.
She emphasised that referring to such an individual as a nurse is misleading and undermines the integrity of the nursing profession, which is guided by strict training, certification and ethical standards.
The Committee Chairman noted that the development highlights the growing concern over the activities of unqualified individuals who parade themselves as healthcare professionals, thereby endangering the lives of unsuspecting members of the public.
According to her, quackery in the health sector remains a serious threat, as such individuals lack the requisite knowledge, skills and regulatory oversight required to provide safe and effective care.
Dr. Aminu warned that patronising unqualified practitioners could result in severe health complications, including preventable loss of lives, urging residents to always verify the credentials of healthcare providers and seek care only from recognised and accredited health facilities.
The Chairman added that members of the public should promptly report suspected cases of quackery to relevant authorities, assuring that the Committee will continue to work with government agencies to identify and bring offenders to justice.
