Pressure Mounts as Ogun Muslim Vanguards, Stakeholders Agitate for Inclusion in 2027 elections

A coalition of Muslim vanguards and stakeholders in Ogun State has called for the consideration of a Muslim governorship candidate in the 2027 elections, emphasizing fairness, inclusivity, and balanced representation across religion and regions in the state.

The advocacy, themed “Ogun 2027 – Consideration for a Muslim Candidate for Fair Representation Across Region and Religion: Advancing Inclusive Governance and Balancing Muslim Representation in the Governorship Candidacy of the APC Ruling Party and other parties  in Ogun State,” was unveiled during a press conference addressed by the President of the coalition, Amir Sanusi Daud.

Speaking to journalists, Daud clarified that the call was not based on religious sentiment but on competence, capacity, and fairness in leadership selection. He stressed that the coalition’s position seeks to encourage qualified Muslim candidates with proven experience, visibility, and leadership credentials to step forward and contest elective positions.

According to him, the advocacy is not dogmatic but focused on ensuring inclusive governance that reflects the diversity of Ogun State.

“This advocacy is not a dogmatic call. We are advocating for competence, capacity, and qualified candidates with experience and visibility. We are encouraging Muslim candidates to step forward and contest for elective positions in governance,” Daud said.

He further noted that leadership in Ogun State over the past 34 years has largely been dominated by individuals from other religious backgrounds, a development he described as not reflective of the state's religious diversity.

“Over the last 34 years, Muslim representation in the governorship has been minimal. This reality calls for reflection and fairness. Giving attention to this call will enhance diversity and strengthen nation-building,” he added.

The coalition emphasized that democracy thrives when leadership reflects the composition of its people, noting that Ogun State’s cultural and religious diversity should be mirrored in its political leadership.

The group also urged political parties, particularly the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), to adopt inclusive candidate selection processes that promote equity and fairness, while strengthening democratic legitimacy and fostering trust among citizens.

The stakeholders stressed that their call is not about personal interest or sectional agenda but about ensuring that every segment of society feels represented in governance.

They maintained that balanced representation promotes stability, mutual respect, and sustainable development, urging political stakeholders, delegates, and decision-makers to consider these principles ahead of the 2027 governorship race.

The coalition reaffirmed its commitment to promoting social harmony, inclusive governance, and democratic participation, stating that the initiative aims to position Ogun State for greater unity and progress.
