Tinubu Felicitates Ex-IGP Musiliu Smith at 80 | The Alternative News

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former Inspector General of Police, Musiliu Smith, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, celebrated on April 17, 2026.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President joined family, friends, and associates in honouring the retired police chief, describing him as a man of integrity, humility, and professionalism, whose contributions to the nation and the police force remain significant.

Smith began his career with the Nigeria Police Force in Enugu in 1972 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police. He later served as an instructor at the Police College, Ikeja, and as a Divisional Police Officer in Mubi, Adamawa State.

Rising through the ranks, he attained the position of Inspector General of Police on May 29, 1999, marking the peak of a distinguished career in law enforcement.

In 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari recalled him from retirement to serve as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, where he oversaw appointments, promotions, and disciplinary matters within the police. He later resigned from the role in 2022.

President Tinubu noted that Smith’s service across various capacities was defined by honesty, discipline, and a commitment to excellence. He also highlighted his academic achievement at the University of Ibadan, where he obtained a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, as well as his membership of the Provisional Ruling Council in 1998.

Describing him as a “thorough-bred cop,” the President said Smith brought dignity, respectability, and professionalism to the Nigeria Police Force.

Tinubu further commended the former IGP’s continued dedication to the development of Lagos and his commitment to the propagation of Islam since retiring from active service in 2002.

The President wished him continued good health and many more years of meaningful service to Lagos State and Nigeria.
