Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has explained that his recent closed-door meeting with Seyi Makinde was part of ongoing consultations aimed at shaping Nigeria’s future.
The meeting, which lasted about two hours, was held at the Oyo State Secretariat in Ibadan, amid growing engagements among opposition figures ahead of potential political realignments.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Obi said the visit was focused on broader national issues rather than narrow political interests.
“We have come to consult and to continue discussions with His Excellency, the Governor, on issues that concern the future of our country. My dear brother, the Governor, and I share a common belief that Nigeria must work for everyone,” he stated.
The engagement came shortly after a high-level opposition summit in Ibadan, which brought together key political stakeholders across the country. It also followed Obi’s recent meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan, further indicating intensified consultations among prominent leaders.
Obi stressed that the discussions were centred on nation-building, not mere political strategy.
“What we are doing is not about politics for its own sake; it is about Nigeria and how we can build a better nation for all our people.”
He outlined his vision of a united, secure, and productive Nigeria, emphasizing inclusivity and merit-based opportunities.
“We are looking at a Nigeria where every citizen has a fair chance to succeed based on merit and hard work, not connections.”
The former Anambra State governor also highlighted the need for economic transformation, advocating a shift from a consumption-driven economy to a production-based system.
“We want to move Nigeria from consumption to production and ensure our people are gainfully employed.”
The meeting underscores ongoing strategic engagements among opposition leaders as the country gradually approaches the 2027 general elections.
