FG Retains 16 Years as Minimum Admission Age into Tertiary Institutions - The Alternative News

The Federal Government has reaffirmed 16 years as the minimum age requirement for admission into tertiary institutions across the country.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, made this known on Monday during the 2026 policy meeting on admissions held in Abuja.

The decision maintains the policy introduced in July 2025, reversing an earlier position by former education minister, Tahir Mamman.

Alausa said the policy reflects a balance between inclusivity and academic readiness, noting that while exceptionally gifted candidates exist, such cases must be handled under clearly defined guidelines.

He stressed that the integrity of the admission process remains critical to restoring confidence in Nigeria’s education system.

The minister also declared that admissions conducted outside the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) are illegal and will not be recognised.

He warned that institutions violating the approved admission process risk sanctions, including the withdrawal of operating licences.

Alausa further stated that the government would enforce strict compliance with the policy to restore order and credibility in the system.

On digital transformation, the minister highlighted the government’s push toward full adoption of computer-based testing in national examinations, describing digitalisation as an urgent necessity.

He added that efforts to curb examination malpractice have been strengthened through improved verification systems and tighter supervision.

The minister also urged heads of institutions to uphold academic standards by integrating artificial intelligence into their curricula.
