The re-election bid of Siminalayi Fubara encountered uncertainty on Sunday after he abruptly left the screening exercise of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja.
Fubara, who was initially absent during Saturday’s screening of incumbent governors, arrived at the Plateau Governor’s Lodge, bvenue of the exercise, around 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. However, he exited the screening room after about 20 minutes, visibly displeased.
The governor declined to speak with journalists who had awaited his arrival for hours, offering only a brief “No comment” when approached.
Unlike the usual practice where committee members escort governors out as a mark of respect, Fubara was not accompanied out of the venue. Reports indicate that committee members remained behind and only left the room several minutes after his departure.
The screening session was presided over by the APC Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Dalori.
Fubara’s political situation has been complicated by his ongoing rift with his former ally and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. There are speculations that Wike is backing Kingsley Chinda as a potential replacement for the Rivers governorship ticket.
Chinda, who represents Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency, was reportedly among the first aspirants screened for the party’s ticket.
Reacting to developments, APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, stated that the screening process was still ongoing and that no official report had been released.
Earlier, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda had explained Fubara’s earlier absence, citing official state engagements. He emphasized that the party remains flexible in accommodating governors’ schedules.
The outcome of Fubara’s screening remains unclear.
