There has been growing outrage over the alleged detention of a teenage girl at a police station in the Arandun area of Kwara State.
Videos circulating on social media showed residents storming the police station to demand the release of the teenager or her arraignment in court, after reportedly being held for more than three days.
In one of the videos, the girl’s mother claimed that her daughter was not the original suspect. She explained that the police initially attempted to arrest her over an offence allegedly committed by another child but later released her after three days upon meeting bail conditions.
According to her, officers subsequently returned about a week later to arrest her 16-year-old daughter, who has since remained in detention.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the Kwara State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The incident has reignited concerns over “arrest by proxy,” a practice previously condemned by the Nigeria Police Force, which described it as unlawful and unacceptable.
