The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB) has confirmed the killing of a teacher and the abduction of a school principal alongside several students following an attack by gunmen on a secondary school in Oyo State.
The incident occurred on Friday morning at Community High School, located in Ahoro-Esinele community, Oriire Local Government Area, throwing residents and parents into panic as they sought information about the victims.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Executive Chairman of OYOSUBEB, Nureni Adeniran, described the development as a painful tragedy for the state’s education sector.
“This is a dark and painful moment for our education family in Oyo State, and our hearts are with the affected parents, teachers, and the entire community,” he said.
“We mourn with the family of the teacher whose life was tragically cut short. His service, dedication, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
Residents disclosed that the attackers stormed the school between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., shot a teacher, and abducted the principal, Rachael Alamu, along with an unspecified number of students.
The assailants, reportedly armed, fled into a nearby forest reserve bordering the community after carrying out the attack.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Oyo State Police Command, Ayanlade Olayinka, said security operatives had been deployed to the area.
He added that authorities were still working to verify the exact number of students abducted, noting that the Commissioner of Police had visited the community alongside a tactical team to coordinate response efforts and assess the situation.
Adeniran appealed to parents and residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies handling the rescue operation and ongoing investigation.
The incident has renewed concerns over rising insecurity in parts of Oyo State.
The attack comes weeks after suspected terrorists reportedly targeted travellers along the Ibadan–Ijebu road in a failed kidnap attempt that left one person dead.
