A three-year-old girl, identified as Afnan, has died following a devastating rainstorm that struck Mokwa town, the headquarters of Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.
Sources told Daily Trust that the incident occurred around 12:00 a.m. on Monday when a room where the child was sleeping with her mother and five siblings collapsed due to the شدت of the storm.
A resident, Mr. Galadima Audu, disclosed that the mother and her five other children sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
“The incident happened around 12 a.m. on Monday. We got to the hospital around 1 a.m. There were seven people in the room, including the mother.
“The mother’s legs were broken. We had to remove broken blocks from their bodies. The other children were also injured and are currently at the hospital.
“The girl who died was rushed to the hospital alive but died minutes later. The father is away in Kiama, Kwara State, where he is doing menial jobs,” he said.
He listed the affected communities as Tifi-Maza, Shaba-Lile, Eti-Sheshi, Tako-Wangwa, Kpege, and Efu-Goro.
The Chairman of Mokwa Local Government, Jibrin Abdullahi Muregi, who confirmed the incident in a telephone interview, said the full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed.
He added that the rainstorm destroyed houses and properties worth millions of naira, leaving many families displaced.
