A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing alleged irregularities in the party’s recently concluded primaries.
In a statement issued on Monday, June 1, 2026, Lawal accused the party leadership of manipulating the primaries to favour former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
He alleged that the process was compromised at multiple levels, producing predetermined outcomes that undermined fairness and internal democracy within the party.
“I am exiting the ADC because its just concluded primaries were at all levels massively rigged in favour of Kachalla Abubakar Atiku,” Lawal stated.
The former SGF further accused party stakeholders of maintaining silence over the alleged irregularities.
“I sense a conspiracy of silence of which I want no part. Most members of the party are behaving as if this is the normal thing to do,” he added.
Beyond his resignation, Lawal declared his opposition to Atiku Abubakar’s reported presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He argued that supporting the former Vice-President could indirectly boost the re-election chances of President Bola Tinubu.
Lawal also questioned the political direction of opposition figures backing Atiku, stressing that leadership decisions should be guided by competence and national interest rather than sentiment or loyalty.
The former SGF disclosed that he would take a break from active political engagement and consult with his allies before determining his next political move.
