Chairman of Heirs Holdings and founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Tony Elumelu, has stirred widespread reactions after attributing his success largely to luck.
The billionaire banker and economist made the remark during a candid interview with popular YouTuber Korty EO, where he challenged the common notion that success is solely the result of hard work and intelligence.
Speaking on his journey, Elumelu acknowledged the years of effort he invested while climbing the corporate ladder. However, he maintained that external factors beyond personal control played a decisive role in shaping his achievements.
“I am here because of luck. At times, you don’t get successful because you are the best in class or because you are the fittest or most energetic. Sometimes, you need luck and I am a product of luck,” he said.
Despite his emphasis on luck, Elumelu advised aspiring entrepreneurs not to downplay the importance of persistence and discipline, stressing that determination remains crucial in the pursuit of success.
His comments have since generated intense debate across social media, with many Nigerians and business analysts questioning how a figure widely regarded as a self-made entrepreneur could attribute his rise primarily to luck rather than decades of strategic effort and resilience.
