The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), , has once again voiced his opposition to the continued detention of leader of the (IPOB), insisting that individuals should not be arrested for expressing their views.
Speaking during an event in Washington, Obi stated that there is no valid reason to keep Kanu in detention, emphasizing that freedom of expression must be upheld in a democratic society.
“I have said this repeatedly, there is no reason for detaining Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. You cannot arrest somebody just because the person is speaking on radio,” Obi said.
Drawing from his personal experience in politics, the former governor of Anambra State noted that criticism and verbal attacks are part of public life and should not be criminalised.
“I am a politician; people have been calling me names. It’s not an offence,” he added.
Obi further extended his stance to include all political and separatist agitators across the country, advocating dialogue and engagement as the best approach to resolving grievances and maintaining national unity.
“Even all agitators, if I were in government today, I would discuss with them, engage them, and consult them. If they have reasons for their actions, it is only through engagement that we can understand and find solutions,” he said.
However, Obi acknowledged that he currently holds no public office and therefore lacks the authority to implement such measures.
“But I am not in a position to do anything today,” he concluded.
