OGSG to Celebrate 2026 Democracy Day in Low-Key Manner - The Alternative News

The Ogun State Government (OGSG) has announced that the 2026 Democracy Day celebration in the state will be observed in a subdued and reflective manner.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, public servants, stakeholders, development partners and members of the general public were informed that activities earlier outlined for the June 12 commemoration will no longer hold in their originally planned format.

The statement explained that the decision was reached after careful consideration of prevailing national circumstances and the need for collective responsibility and sensitivity at this time.

While June 12 remains a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic history and a symbol of the people’s enduring commitment to democratic ideals, the state government noted that it is more appropriate to mark the occasion in a solemn and restrained manner.

It added that the observance would provide an opportunity to reflect on the gains of democracy, honour the sacrifices of its heroes and reaffirm the collective responsibility of citizens to support good governance, peace, and development.

The government also expressed appreciation to all stakeholders and residents for their understanding, cooperation, and continued support, while commending the people of Ogun State for their unwavering commitment to the progress, unity and prosperity of the state.
