Ekiti State Governor and Governor-elect, Biodun Oyebanji, has held a closed-door meeting with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the June 20 election, Wole Oluyede, in what appears to be part of post-election reconciliation efforts.
The meeting, which took place at Oluyede’s country home in Ikere-Ekiti, was attended by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and other leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
The development comes hours after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Oyebanji winner of Saturday’s governorship election.
Oyebanji was re-elected after securing 319,224 votes, defeating his closest rivals, PDP candidate Olumayokun Oluyede and African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Dare Bejide, across the state’s 16 local government areas.
The Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, announced the results in the early hours of Sunday at INEC’s headquarters on Iyin Road in Ado-Ekiti.
Sources familiar with the meeting said discussions centred on fostering unity, ensuring peace and promoting continued development in the state following the election.
Earlier, Oyebanji disclosed that he had reached out to both Oluyede and Bejide, stressing that the election was over and calling on all political actors to work together for the progress of Ekiti State, regardless of party affiliations.
According to the report, the meeting was still ongoing.
