A Professor of Resource and Development Economics and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Crescent University, Abeokuta, Prof. Rasaki Kareem, has identified key challenges hindering Nigeria’s progress, including political instability, lack of continuity in government policies and programmes, poor implementation, improper planning, and corruption.
Prof. Kareem made this known during the inaugural lecture organised by the University with the theme, “Resource Efficiency vs. Economic Development: Whither Nigeria,” emphasised the need for attitudinal change among citizens and leaders, noting that climate change continues to have significant effects on the country’s economic growth.
The professor recommended resource efficiency and sustainable economic development as key strategies to curb corruption. He further urged the electorate to exercise their voting power responsibly in the 2027 general elections.
He also called on the government to diversify the economy by investing in sectors such as mechanised agriculture, manufacturing innovation and technology-driven services. According to him, such investments would reduce dependence on oil and shield the economy from external shocks.
In his remarks, the Proprietor of the institution and Chairman, Board of Trustees, Prince Moruf Adesegun Ajibola, commended the guest lecturer for what he described as a thought-provoking inaugural lecture, pledging to sustain and improve the quality of subsequent programmes.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibrahim Gbajabiamila, said the institution, which commenced operations 20 years ago with 300 students, has grown significantly and contributed immensely to the academic development of young graduates.
