United States President, Donald Trump, has called on Israel and Iran to immediately cease hostilities following a fresh exchange of missile strikes.
The development comes after both countries reportedly traded attacks for the first time since a ceasefire took effect in April. Iranian strikes were said to have been launched on Sunday evening, hours after Israel confirmed hitting targets linked to Hezbollah in southern Beirut.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, the strikes were in response to rocket fire from Hezbollah positions into Israeli territory.
Iran has maintained that its ceasefire understanding with the United States and Israel should extend to Lebanon, a position rejected by Israel, which insists that its military operations against Hezbollah remain ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps described Sunday’s offensive as the “beginning of a full week of continuous strikes.”
Prior to Israel’s retaliation, Trump had indicated he would advise Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, against escalating the situation.
In a post on Truth Social, the U.S. President suggested that both sides may be considering an immediate ceasefire, noting that negotiations for peace were ongoing, although neither Israel nor Iran has officially confirmed such talks.
Tensions remain high despite earlier diplomatic engagements, with last week’s exchanges between the U.S. and Iran raising further concerns over the durability of the ceasefire agreement.
