The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has assured Nigerians that their votes will count in the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan gave the assurance during a courtesy visit to former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), at his residence in Minna, Niger State, on Friday.

Leading a delegation of National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, directors, and technical aides, Amupitan described Abubakar as “the father of democracy in Nigeria,” noting that his leadership during the transition to civilian rule in 1999 marked a defining moment in the nation’s democratic journey.

He said INEC regarded the former Head of State not merely as a statesman but as a pillar of institutional support, commending his role in promoting credible elections and peaceful coexistence.

The INEC boss also praised the National Peace Committee’s Peace Accord initiative, describing it as a “moralising influence” that has encouraged political actors to embrace non-violence, thereby strengthening the sovereignty of the Nigerian people.

Describing the visit as a “pilgrimage of appreciation,” Amupitan congratulated Abubakar on his 84th birthday and reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to electoral integrity despite prevailing challenges.

“Our determination is to ensure that ordinary Nigerians can vote with confidence, knowing their votes will be counted and reflected in the final outcome,” he said.

He further confirmed that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.

In his response, Abubakar called on Nigerians to support INEC’s efforts, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring peaceful and credible elections.
