Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, has called on wealthy Nigerians, particularly figures in the entertainment industry such as, Davido, Burna boy Asake and others, to support the less privileged in society.
Speaking on Saturday in Lokoja, Kogi State, during the launch of a national community food bank initiative, the First Lady emphasized that while enjoying luxury is not wrong, the rich must also prioritize humanitarian efforts.
According to her, “Nigeria is a great country. We have a lot of wealthy people, but our priorities are different. It is high time we started helping those who truly need help.”
Mrs Tinubu noted that the burden on the government remains significant, urging successful individuals to complement government efforts through charitable initiatives and foundations.
She further appealed directly to young entertainers, encouraging them to emulate global stars like Akon, known for his philanthropic contributions across Africa.
“The Burna Boys of this world, Asake, Davido, we want to see you establish foundations and use your resources to help the poor,” she said.
While acknowledging the appeal of luxury lifestyles, she added, “Good cars are good; a Maybach is good, Rolls-Royce is good, but you can still help. The responsibility on government is huge.”
In addition, the First Lady reiterated her advocacy for Nigerians to support small-scale businesses, highlighting local ventures such as akara production as viable means of economic empowerment.
Her remarks underscore a growing call for public-private collaboration in addressing poverty and improving livelihoods across the country.
