In a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Demola Bakare, the commission clarified that Gbajabiamila was neither arrested nor detained, but voluntarily honoured an invitation from investigators at its headquarters in Abuja.

According to the ICPC, the presidential aide responded to inquiries aimed at establishing how the purported council allegedly operated from the Federal Secretariat for about two years without any legal backing or presidential approval.

The investigation follows a directive by President Tinubu, who ordered a probe into the activities of the alleged agency and demanded a report within 30 days.

The Federal Government has since disowned the PFIPC, describing it as an unauthorised body allegedly run by Adeniyi Adeyemi, who is accused of falsely presenting himself as its Director-General.

The controversy deepened after Adeyemi allegedly claimed he paid ₦400 million in bribes to facilitate the operations of the agency, including funds he alleged were paid to a person he believed to be Gbajabiamila. The Chief of Staff has denied the allegation, insisting he reported the matter to security agencies.

Further investigations are examining claims that the alleged organisation secured office space within the Federal Secretariat, opened accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria, and recruited staff using official government documents.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has commenced a separate inquiry into the legality and operations of the council.

Adeyemi is currently facing criminal charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja, including conspiracy and forgery, and is in police custody after a warrant was issued for his arrest over failure to appear in court.

In a related development, Gbajabiamila has filed a ₦15 billion defamation suit against Adeyemi over the bribery allegations.

The ICPC says investigations are ongoing, with further updates to be communicated as necessary.
