Iran Closes Strait of Hormuz Amid Escalating Tensions with United States - The Alternative News

Iran has announced the closure of the  following a naval confrontation involving one of its forces and a foreign vessel accused of breaching authorised routes.

According to reports, the the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it fired a naval cruise missile as a warning at the vessel after it allegedly ignored repeated instructions. The ship was eventually halted after the warning strike.

In response, the  launched a fresh wave of military strikes targeting Iranian positions, further escalating tensions in the region.

The IRGC subsequently declared the strategic waterway closed “until further notice,” citing what it described as unlawful interference by foreign powers in the region’s maritime activities. The announcement was made through.

“Given the precarious situation caused by unlawful interference by outside parties, the Strait of Hormuz is to be closed until further notice and until regional interference by the US ceases,” the IRGC said in its statement. It added that no vessel would be permitted to pass through the channel during this period.

The IRGC also warned that any attempt by the US to challenge the closure would be met with strong military action, including potential strikes on American bases and allied positions in the region.

Meanwhile, Iran’s parliamentary speaker, , issued a stern message on social media, declaring that “the era of one-sided deals is over” and warning that failure to honour agreements would come at a cost.

The latest development comes despite a recent agreement reached in June between Iran and the United States aimed at ending hostilities across the Middle East, including reopening key shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. The deal, which was expected to be formalised in Switzerland, had raised hopes of easing months of conflict that have disrupted global energy markets and claimed thousands of lives.

However, continued reprisals and mutual distrust have stalled progress, with both sides engaging in intermittent military actions, raising concerns over a broader regional escalation.
