The Kano State Government has announced plans to spend N1 million on each couple in its forthcoming mass wedding programme, as part of efforts to support low-income families and promote social stability.
The Deputy Commander of the Kano Hisbah Board, Sheikh Mujahideen Aminuddeen, disclosed that the initiative, popularly known as “Auren Gata” (marriage for the privileged), is open to both Muslims and Christians.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano, Aminuddeen said the programme welcomes widows, widowers, divorcees, spinsters, and bachelors. He noted that three Christian couples participated in the last edition held in October 2023, although participation for the upcoming event is yet to be confirmed.
According to him, the mass wedding initiative plays a vital role in strengthening families and curbing social vices. He explained that it aligns with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), which encourage marriage and family life among Muslims.
Aminuddeen added that the programme also helps reduce street hawking among young girls seeking funds for marriage and addresses immoral behaviour often linked to delayed marriages due to financial constraints.
He further revealed that the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is prioritising orphans and underprivileged families, with beneficiaries selected through a rigorous screening and verification process.
Stakeholders have praised the initiative for its social impact. Sheikh Muhammad Lawan-Yakub described it as commendable, noting that it could strengthen families, protect young people from immoral behaviour and enhance social stability. He expressed optimism that counselling and post-marriage guidance provided by the Hisbah Board would help reduce divorce rates.
However, some residents have raised concerns. Jamila Suraja, a Kano resident, acknowledged the programme’s benefits but warned that some participants in previous editions allegedly entered the marriages primarily to access government support rather than build lasting unions.
Another resident, Hassan Maikadara, said the scheme provides opportunities for individuals who wish to marry but lack financial means, helping them avoid immoral activities.
From an economic perspective, Dr Abdulsalam Kani noted that the initiative could boost economic activity and reduce poverty if properly implemented. He stressed that empowerment efforts must be tied to skills acquisition or existing trades to be effective.
Similarly, sociologist Dr Muhammad Hadi-Musa described the programme as more than a ceremonial exercise, calling it a strategic social intervention. He said it reflects a policy response to real societal challenges and has helped promote simpler, more affordable weddings while encouraging responsible family values.
Meanwhile, the Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, revealed that the state government has earmarked N1.5 billion for the upcoming exercise, which will cater to 1,500 couples.
Daurawa stated that each groom will receive N100,000 as dowry support, while each bride will be given N100,000 as empowerment capital. In addition, couples will be provided with essential household items, including beds, mattresses, furniture and food supplies.
He noted that over 5,000 individuals applied for the programme, out of which 3,000 beneficiaries, forming 1,500 couples, will be selected.
As part of the screening process, intending couples will undergo medical tests, including HIV, hepatitis B, pregnancy, and genotype checks. The board will also ensure compatibility between partners, and verify that grooms have a means of livelihood and accommodation.
Daurawa added that the Hisbah Board will play a supervisory role in the marriages, stating that participants cannot initiate divorce without the board’s consent.
The date for the mass wedding is yet to be announced.
