A private school in Fadeyi area of Lagos on Tuesday suspended academic activities in honour of a slain leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya.

The school, Great Josade School, located in Ereko, Fadeyi, where the deceased resided, temporarily closed its gates as a mark of respect following his burial earlier in the day. A banner placed at the entrance carried Ajiboye’s photograph alongside an obituary message announcing the closure.

Ajiboye, who served as Organising Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the union, died from gunshot injuries sustained during an attack by unidentified gunmen in the Fadeyi area on Sunday evening.

Family members, colleagues and supporters had earlier gathered in Ketu, Lagos, to pay their last respects during his burial, with emotional scenes captured in videos circulating on social media.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, said investigations were ongoing to apprehend those behind the killing.

“The incident happened on Sunday, and one person died. He is a member of the transport union in Lagos. Investigation has commenced, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the killers,” he said.

Sources said Ajiboye had visited the Fadeyi area to see childhood friends before he was attacked while leaving the neighbourhood.

A union member identified as Taofeek disclosed that three other occupants of the vehicle also sustained gunshot injuries and were receiving treatment in hospital.

Reacting to the killing, the Lagos State Chairman of the NURTW, Mustapha Adekunle, described Ajiboye as a loyal ally and committed union leader, expressing deep sorrow over his death.
