Reps Withdraw State Police Bill, Consider Executive Proposal - The Alternative News

The House of Representatives has withdrawn its earlier constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police and resolved to consider a similar proposal transmitted by the Executive.

The decision was taken during plenary on Tuesday, where lawmakers deliberated on the Executive-sponsored bill and approved it for first and second readings.

The development effectively places the House’s previous proposal on hold as members shift focus to the version presented by the Executive arm of government.

Following debate on the general principles of the bill, it was referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative scrutiny.

At the committee stage, lawmakers are expected to examine key aspects of the proposed legislation, including the structure, funding and operational framework for state police.

The committee will also assess the constitutional implications of devolving greater policing powers to state governments.

Upon completion of its review, the committee is expected to present its report to the House for further consideration.

The bill will then proceed through additional legislative stages as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process before any final adoption.
