A three-storey building used as a student hostel has collapsed in Amokpala, Oko village, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, leaving several occupants trapped beneath the rubble.
The structure, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge, reportedly caved in on Sunday night near a filling station in the area.
Confirming the incident, Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, said a joint rescue operation is currently underway.
According to him, security operatives swiftly responded after receiving a distress call, secured the scene and began coordinated rescue efforts alongside emergency responders.
Agencies involved in the operation include the Anambra State Fire Service and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, both of which have been working to those trapped.
Ikenga disclosed that some victims have already been rescued and taken to a hospital in Oko for treatment, although the exact number of casualties or affected persons remains unknown.
Authorities have urged residents to stay calm, avoid spreading unverified information and keep away from the scene to allow emergency teams carry out their work without obstruction.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with more updates expected as the situation develops.
