Troops Arrest Foreign ISIS Operative in Borno - The Alternative News

Troops of the Nigerian military have arrested a suspected foreign operative linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) in Cross Kauwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

According to security sources, the suspect, believed to be an Arab of Moroccan origin, was apprehended after troops successfully repelled a coordinated terrorist attack on the community. The insurgents were forced to retreat, abandoning equipment as they fled.

Following the encounter, troops launched an exploitation operation, extending search and pursuit efforts along the terrorists’ withdrawal routes. During the exercise, several operational materials were recovered, including high-frequency hand-held radios and other communication devices considered vital to the group’s command structure.

Intelligence obtained from the recovered items enabled troops to intensify operations towards the Lake Chad Islands axis and Abadam Local Government Area. The pursuit eventually led to the arrest of the fleeing foreign suspect.

Military sources disclosed that the suspect had earlier been under intelligence surveillance. This followed a joint forensic analysis with international partners of video footage recovered from a camcorder seized after the Cross Kauwa encounter. The device reportedly belonged to a terrorist cameraman killed during the failed attack.

Further findings indicate that extremist groups often deploy media operatives alongside combat units to document attacks for propaganda, recruitment, and operational evaluation purposes.

Footage from the camcorder was said to have played a key role in identifying the suspect.

The arrested individual has since been airlifted by the Nigerian Air Force to a secure military facility, where he is undergoing interrogation and further intelligence analysis.

Authorities are expected to investigate his role within the terrorist network, his entry route into Nigeria, and any possible involvement in training, operational planning, or media activities for ISWAP.

Security officials have described the arrest as a major intelligence breakthrough that could provide deeper insight into the structure, financing, and international connections of terrorist groups operating within the Lake Chad Basin.

They also reiterated concerns about the involvement of foreign nationals in supporting extremist activities in the region, particularly in areas such as training, communications, media production, explosives handling, and strategic coordination.

Investigations are ongoing, with officials noting that further details remain restricted due to operational security considerations.
