United States President Donald Trump has praised Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as decisive leadership in tackling terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria.

In a letter dated July 6, 2026, Trump commended Tinubu’s efforts, particularly in addressing violence affecting vulnerable communities. The development was disclosed in a statement by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

“Thank you for your thoughtful letter. Your kind words mean a great deal to me, and I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people,” Trump wrote.

He further applauded Tinubu’s resolve to confront security challenges, describing it as an honour to support Nigeria in the fight against terrorism.

Trump also reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to strengthening security cooperation with Nigeria, noting that both nations share a common goal of combating terrorism in all its forms.

According to him, the partnership between the United States and Nigeria remains crucial amid rising conflicts across West Africa and other parts of the world.

He referenced the US–Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap as a key framework guiding joint efforts, including military training, intelligence sharing, and coordinated operations.

Trump revealed that United States Special Operations Forces had been deployed to support and train personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, enhancing their capacity to secure the country and protect citizens.

The Presidency also disclosed that both countries have intensified collaboration through a Joint Working Group led by their respective National Security Advisers.

As part of the cooperation, a coordinated operation conducted on May 16 reportedly targeted suspected extremist hideouts in the Lake Chad region, resulting in the killing of a senior terrorist leader, Abubakar Al-Minoki, and several of his associates.

Additionally, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, recently visited Abuja, where he held talks with senior Nigerian officials and pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation in security and other areas of mutual interest.
