US to Monitor Nigeria’s 2027 Elections – Congressman - The Alternative News

A United States Congressman, Riley Moore, has said the US will closely monitor Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Moore, a Republican lawmaker, disclosed this during an interview with NoireTV published on Sunday.

He said the administration of Donald Trump would pay close attention to how the elections are conducted.

“We’re certainly going to be watching these results and how these elections unfold and how they’re executed. That’s something that myself and the administration are going to be paying very close attention to,” he said.

The lawmaker also revealed that the United States House of Representatives is considering an appropriations bill with provisions affecting Nigeria, particularly on religious freedom and security assistance.

According to him, the bill contains provisions relating to the persecution of Christians and possible restrictions on US security support to Nigeria, depending on actions taken by the Nigerian government.

“There’s some pretty strong and aggressive language in that bill that’s going to be binding as it relates to our relationship to Nigeria moving forward,” Moore stated.

Moore further disclosed that he is co-sponsoring the proposed Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026 alongside Chris Smith.

If passed, the bill would require the US Secretary of State to submit regular reports on religious freedom conditions in Nigeria, assess compliance with international obligations, and review security assistance and sanctions.

He added that he would continue engaging with the Trump administration on developments concerning Nigeria, noting that he was scheduled to meet the US president.

The development indicates growing international attention on Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
