The campaign organisation of Mohammed Adamu, former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has dismissed claims that the ex-police chief does not have a political platform to contest the 2027 Nasarawa State governorship election.
Adamu’s campaign organisation said Aliyu Bello, chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, had repeatedly questioned the platform on which the former IGP would contest the election.
In May, Adamu resigned his membership of the APC after losing the party’s governorship primary.
In his resignation letter, submitted at his Gayam Ward in Lafia, the state capital, the former IGP accused the party leadership of compromising its internal processes.
He said the APC governorship primary in the state fell short of democratic standards and failed to reflect the will of party members at the grassroots.
However, in a statement issued on Friday, Otaru Douglas, director of media and strategic communications of the campaign organisation, described the APC chairman’s position as false, laughable and a product of panic.
Douglas said Adamu had secured a platform to contest the election through his membership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
“Adamu’s defection from the APC, following the charade called a primary election, was a strategic move to a credible and people-oriented platform, the Social Democratic Party (SDP),” the statement reads.
“The IGP is contesting the 2027 governorship election, and, by the grace of God and the will of the people of Nasarawa State, he will win convincingly.”
Douglas also criticised the APC chairman in Nasarawa, alleging that the party’s governorship primary had been condemned by members and stakeholders across the state’s 13 local government areas.
“The governorship primary he supervised as state chairman has been widely condemned by party members and stakeholders across the 13 LGAs as lacking transparency, fairness and internal democracy,” he said.
He accused Bello of resorting to personal attacks against Adamu and warned against further criticism of the former police chief.
“We are therefore calling on Dr Aliyu Bello to stay in his political lane and face his party’s dwindling fortunes,” Douglas said.
He said Adamu’s political agenda remained centred on transparent governance, improved security and development, adding that his decision to contest under the SDP would not be affected by criticism from political opponents.
“No amount of intimidation and media blackmail would alter Adamu’s ambition,” Douglas added.
He warned that further attempts to disparage, defame or malign Adamu would attract “firm, proportionate and decisive political responses.”
