Family Confirms N50m Ransom Paid for Release of Kebbi Judge - The Alternative News

The family of Faruk Hassan Bunza has confirmed that a ransom of N50 million was paid to secure his release after he was abducted from his residence in Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

Justice Bunza was kidnapped in the early hours of July 26 when armed bandits attacked his home. He regained his freedom on Monday after spending eight days in captivity.

His release was confirmed by the Kebbi State Police Command, the state Ministry of Justice and his family. Police spokesperson Bashir Usman said the judge had safely reunited with his family, adding that efforts are ongoing to apprehend those responsible.

A family member disclosed that the abductors initially demanded N200 million but later agreed to accept N50 million after days of negotiation. The source noted that the judge is currently recovering at home following the ordeal.

The family also expressed gratitude to the Kebbi State government, security agencies, and members of the public for their support and prayers throughout the period of his abduction.

According to another relative, the ransom was delivered in a forest location over 70 kilometres from Birnin Kebbi. The abductors, said to be about five in number, reportedly made unusual requests, including asking for drinks before collecting the money.

The judge was reportedly returned home early Monday morning in a commercial vehicle and appeared to be in stable condition with no visible physical injuries.

Meanwhile, the police reiterated their opposition to ransom payments, despite confirming that the kidnappers had made demands. Investigations into the incident have been intensified to bring the perpetrators to justice.
