The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to protect lives and property following recent attacks in Benue State.

Obi made the call during a visit to Otukpo-Nobi and Efeyi-Ugboju communities in Otukpo Local Government Area, where recent attacks reportedly left several people dead, injured or missing.

The former Anambra State governor said he joined residents in praying for the victims at the site of a mass burial and also visited hospitals to sympathise with injured survivors and wish them a speedy recovery.

Obi said he was informed during the visit that 14 people had been kidnapped along Ankpechi Road earlier in the day.

He urged the Federal Government to demonstrate greater commitment to securing citizens and addressing ungoverned spaces which, according to him, have become breeding grounds for insecurity.

“The primary purpose of government is the security and welfare of its citizens. When government fails in this responsibility, as it has with the people of Otukpo-Nobi, Efeyi-Ugboju, and other troubled communities, it must be reminded of that sacred obligation,” Obi said.

He also called for stronger measures to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further attacks.

Earlier reports indicated that gunmen abducted 14 passengers travelling in an 18-seater bus along the Ankpechi–Omutele axis of Ohimini Local Government Area.

The police later confirmed that five victims, including a four-year-old boy, had been rescued, while nine others remained in captivity as of Friday.

The latest incidents followed earlier attacks in the area. At least 16 people were reportedly killed in Nobi in early July, while another attack on Efeyi community later that month reportedly claimed 15 lives.

Obi prayed for the repose of those killed and expressed solidarity with the affected communities.
