The Surveyors’ Wives Association of Nigeria (SWAN), under the auspices of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Ogun State Branch, has urged women to prioritise their health, stressing that a healthy woman is essential to a healthy family.
The association made the call at its 2026 Public Lecture held at NIS Multipurpose Hall, Abeokuta, Ogun State with the theme: “The Woman, Her Health, Her Family.”
In her welcome address, the State Chairman of SWAN, Mrs. Oluwakemi Oluwafemi, said the event was organised to equip women with relevant knowledge and empower them with practical solutions to improve their health and that of their families.
Oluwafemi emphasised the important role women play in maintaining the physical, mental and emotional well-being of their families.
She said, “The role a woman plays in ensuring that herself and every member of her family remain in good health cannot be overemphasised.”
In his goodwill message, the Ogun State Chairman of NIS and Special Guest of Honour, Surv. Abiodun Liadi, said Ogun SWAN had continued to set the pace in promoting knowledge, unity and service.
Liadi described surveyors as partners in nation-building, noting that their ability to define boundaries, create maps and secure land for development was enhanced by the stability of their homes.
“When surveyors go out to define boundaries, create maps and secure lands for development, they do so with the peace of mind that comes from a stable home,” he said.
Also speaking, the National President of SWAN, Alhaja Bilqis Lawal, said the public lecture was held biennially in Ogun and Lagos states, urging other state chapters to emulate the initiative. She also encouraged SWAN members to continue supporting their husbands in their endeavours.
Lending his voice, the Chairman of the Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN), Ogun State Branch, Surv. (Pst.) Kayode Adekoya, advised the women to prioritise their health over wealth. According to him, maintaining good health is essential for longevity and a productive family life.
Delivering the lecture, the Chief Medical Director of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, Dr. Oluwabunmi Fatungase, urged women to make their health a priority, describing them as vital to the stability of society and the family.
She underscored the interconnectedness between a woman’s health and the well-being of her family, explaining that women often play significant roles in caring for family members and managing the home, encouraging them to avoid neglecting their own health while attending to the needs of others.
According to her prioritising personal health should not be regarded as selfishness, but as an important investment in the stability and future of the family
Fatungase stressed that “a healthy woman is a healthy family,” while advising women to pay attention to their emotional well-being by getting adequate rest, sleeping well and maintaining peace of mind.
She also urged them to regularly check their health status, including breast examinations, blood sugar and blood pressure checks, as well as cervical cancer screening.
The OOUTH CMD further advised the women to eat fresh fruits and avoid excessive consumption of preserved foods that could negatively affect their health and overall wellness.
The highlight of the occasion was the presentation of awards to members of NIS who had contributed significantly to the development of the association and investiture of Surv. Oyebanji Akinhanmi as Grand Patron of SWAN and Surv. Lawrence Ayanwale as Patron.
