OPay Threatens Legal Action Over False Shutdown Publication - The Alternative News

Fintech company, OPay Digital Services Limited, has threatened legal action against an X user over a false publication claiming that the company would shut down its operations indefinitely from September 1, 2026.

The company described the claim as false and misleading and demanded that the user, Cute Hafserh, also known as @haifah_er_abba, delete the post, issue a retraction and tender an unreserved apology.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, OPay said it was notified of the publication made on August 30, in which the user allegedly informed customers that the fintech company would embark on an indefinite break and advised them to withdraw their funds.

OPay described the publication as “false, malicious, unlawful, libellous and defamatory,” saying it had caused reputational and commercial damage to the company.

The company gave the user until 11:59 p.m. on Monday to delete the publication and stop further circulation of the claim.

OPay stated: “You are hereby required to permanently delete and desist from disseminating or further publicising the said publication from your X account or any other platform before 11:59 PM WAT today, issue a clear and unequivocal retraction of the said publication, and forthwith, tender an unreserved apology to us.”

The company warned that it would pursue all available legal remedies over the publication.

“Take notice that your action has caused irreparable damage to us and we shall take all appropriate legal action against you and shall pursue all remedies available to us,” it added.

In a separate warning published on its official social media platforms, OPay urged members of the public to verify information before sharing it.

The company said, “Not everything you see online is true. False narratives can cause real harm, and creating or spreading content that misleads people should not be taken lightly.”

OPay also assured its customers that its operations remained normal, adding that it would communicate directly with customers whenever there was important information concerning its services.

The X user subsequently deleted the original post and apologised to OPay.

In a follow-up post on Monday, Hafserh acknowledged that the claim about OPay going on an indefinite break from September 1 was false and misleading.

“I have come to the notice that it was false and misleading information. I have taken down my post. #OPay_NG operations are normal, and there is no break or shutdown,” the user wrote.

The user also apologised for the publication and any inconvenience caused, explaining that the claim had been circulating online for days before it was shared on the account.
