The proposed opposition summit aimed at uniting political forces against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections has been postponed.

The summit, initially scheduled for August 18, 2026, will now hold on August 31, 2026, according to the G-100, the group convening the meeting.

The group said the postponement followed consultations with participating opposition parties and members of the minority caucus of the House of Representatives.

The G-100 explained that the summit would be more productive if held after the National Peace Summit, scheduled for August 18. It added that the additional time would allow the parties to refine proposals and frameworks for consideration at the August 31 meeting.

The planned summit is expected to bring together the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led at the presidential level by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) associated with Peter Obi, and other opposition parties.

The G-100 has been advocating for a united opposition, warning that a divided opposition would struggle to defeat Tinubu and the APC in the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by Salihu Lukman, the group said consultations with the leadership and key stakeholders of six opposition parties, as well as members of the House minority caucus, had been “frank, substantive and encouraging.”

It acknowledged that differences existed among the parties but said the disagreements had not prevented discussions on possible areas of cooperation.

According to the group, the consultations had revealed a growing recognition among the opposition parties that greater coordination and structured engagement were necessary ahead of the 2027 elections.

The G-100 expressed confidence that the August 31 summit would produce significant outcomes and advance efforts towards a broader opposition coalition.
