Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has cautioned against any attempt to rig the forthcoming August 15 governorship election, warning that such actions could trigger political unrest similar to the 1983 Nigerian general elections crisis.

Speaking to supporters at Orita-Sabo in Olorunda Local Government Area on Monday, Adeleke called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process. He urged the President to rein in party members allegedly involved in acts capable of undermining democracy.

The governor expressed concern over what he described as ongoing political tensions in the state, alleging harassment by security agencies and actions by political opponents. He emphasized that, as the Chief Security Officer of the state, he would not tolerate any form of electoral malpractice.

Adeleke referenced the political turmoil that followed the 1983 elections, particularly the crisis surrounding Michael Ajasin in Ondo State, warning that a repeat must be avoided.

He stressed that his administration is only demanding a free, fair, and transparent election, urging the President to uphold democratic values and protect citizens’ rights.

Earlier, Senator Lere Oyewumi, Director-General of the Imole Campaign Council, encouraged residents to come out in large numbers to vote, describing it as the only way to secure Adeleke’s re-election. 

He also urged voters to safeguard their votes, citing the governor’s performance as justification for another term.
