Nigeria’s Super Falcons may have suffered a setback in their quest to defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, but their 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon has not completely ended their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

With the 2026 WAFCON serving as Africa’s qualifying tournament for the World Cup, the four teams that reach the semi-finals automatically secure the continent’s direct tickets to the tournament in Brazil. However, Nigeria’s loss means they must now navigate a more demanding route to qualification.

African Play-Off Opportunity

Following their quarter-final exit, the Super Falcons will join the other three losing teams in an African play-off. From this stage, only two teams will progress to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Play-Off Tournament.

To keep their hopes alive, Nigeria must win their play-off match and secure one of the two available slots.

Intercontinental Play-Off Challenge

The two African teams that advance will face a tougher test at the global stage, joining eight other nations from different FIFA confederations in the intercontinental play-off tournament.

The tournament will feature 10 teams: two each from Africa, Asia, CONCACAF and South America, alongside one team each from Europe and Oceania.

Final Qualification Pathway

The intercontinental play-off will be played in two phases between November and December 2026, with the final phase scheduled for February 2027.

According to FIFA, six teams will be drawn into three separate knockout pathways, with each pathway producing one team that qualifies for the World Cup. Teams from the same confederation will not be drawn against each other.

For Nigeria, this means they must win their assigned knockout pathway to book a place at the tournament in Brazil.

Hope Remains for Nigeria

Despite the setback, the expanded 32-team format of the Women’s World Cup provides additional opportunities for qualification. Africa has four automatic slots through the WAFCON semi-finals, while two more teams can qualify via the intercontinental play-offs.

While the Super Falcons’ defeat has complicated their journey, it has not closed the door. With determination and improved performance, Nigeria can still secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup by successfully navigating both the African and intercontinental play-offs.
