The United Nations (UN) has officially distanced itself from Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew over claims that he was appointed to a position within its Youth Office.
According to a clarification issued by the UN Youth Office, Adeyemi has no appointment, employment, or affiliation with the organisation and has never been authorised to represent either the office or the United Nations in any capacity.
The clarification was contained in a letter dated July 27, 2026, with reference number UNYO-2026-0017 and transmitted through Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
The response followed an earlier inquiry by Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the UN on July 1, seeking verification of Adeyemi’s purported appointment and documents allegedly linking him to the UN Youth Office.
In its reply, the UN Youth Office categorically stated that Adeyemi “holds no appointment, employment, or affiliation of any kind with the Office,” adding that he had never been authorised to act or speak on its behalf or that of the wider UN system.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, confirmed the development, noting that the UN’s response had put to rest lingering questions surrounding Adeyemi’s alleged appointment.
He further explained that the clarification also addressed controversies over documents purportedly connecting Adeyemi to the organisation.
The matter had earlier sparked allegations of forgery involving the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, in relation to documents reportedly associated with Adeyemi’s claimed position.
Ambassador Ibrahim maintained that the UN’s official stance effectively nullifies any claim presenting Adeyemi as a recognised appointee or representative of the UN Youth Office.
He urged journalists and the public to rely only on verified and official communications when reporting on international appointments, warning that unverified claims could promote misinformation and harm the credibility of individuals and institutions.
